THE THRILL OF HOPE, THE WEARY WORLD REJOICES

Read: James 5:7-8 On the surface, this is straightforward. James urges patience. The followers of Jesus were being harassed, persecuted by Romans, by Jews. But James repeated something that was widely believed among the followers of Jesus: that Jesus would return soon. Just hold on, he will be back soon! Today we know that was not to be the case, at least not in the way they thought. Today we believe that Jesus has returned. Now he is present in his people; we are his eyes and ears and hands. He continues as the humble servant because we imitate him and do, or try to do what he would have done in any particular situation. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, give shelter to the poor, we are doing what Jesus did, and we are doing it with him. Come Lord Jesus! into our hearts, our lives, into our communities. Help us to do your work and thus to spread your kingdom in our broken world. Peter Loan Comments are closed.
