ADVENT DEVOTIONS

THE THRILL OF HOPE, THE  WEARY WORLD REJOICES

Romans 1:1-6 - Lystra Alleyne

Read: Romans 1:1-6

This selection from the beginning of the chapter is known as the “salutation.”  It is Paul’s way of greeting the Roman believers and converts. Paul is inclusive of all believers.  He reminds the Jews that Jesus, a descendant of David, was the fulfillment of God’s covenant with them and he includes the Gentiles by explaining that believers are also expected to make disciples of the Gentiles.  Paul not only mentioned Christ’s birth and his divine nature as the son of God, but also the resurrection and the grace that we have received through him.  In these six verses, Paul presents a mini-sermon.  If I knew nothing about Jesus, reading these six verses would stir my curiosity to find out more about Jesus Christ and his followers.  At present we do not write such long and involved salutations.  If, however, you were asked to introduce yourself to a group of believers who may or may not know you, how would you describe yourself to them?  How would you explain your journey, your beliefs and your mission in a way that would inspire others?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your son, for salvation, and for your saints past and present who edify and enlighten us.  Open our hearts to learn the lessons that you place before us and fill us with the Holy Spirit that if and when we are called to witness, your words will flow through us to inspire others to know you.  Amen
