ADVENT DEVOTIONS
THE THRILL OF HOPE, THE WEARY WORLD REJOICES
Saturday, December 3, 2022
Read: Romans 15:7-13 In this reading, Paul argues, on the basis of four quotations from the Hebrew Bible (What we call the Old Testament.) that Christ came to extend faith in God to all of us Gentiles. So he argues that the promises given to the patriarchs and God’s truth and mercy are not restricted to the Jews, but through the ministry of Christ are offered also to the Gentiles. Verse 9 refers to Psalms 18:49: “I will extol you, O Lord, among the nations, and sing praises to your name.” and II Samuel 22:50 is much the same. Verse 10 is quoted from Deuteronomy 32:43: “Praise, O Heavens, his people…” Verse 11 refers to Psalms 117:1 “Praise the Lord, all you nations! Extol him, all you peoples!” Verse 12 is from Isaiah 11:10: “On that day the root of Jesse will stand as a signal to the peoples; the nations shall inquire of him, and his dwelling will be glorious.” May the God of hope fill you with all joy in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Quoting verse 13) Jim Langworthy References from Harrelson, W. (2003). New interpreter’s study bible. Abingdon Press. Comments are closed.
