Read: Genesis 3:1-7
Genesis Chapter 3 Verses 1-7 explains original sin in the familiar story of Adam and Eve. The couple ignored God’s instructions and succumbed to temptation by the serpent. As a result of their disobedience they were punished and sin and suffering came into the world. That sinful nature is inherited by all mankind. The people of the Old Testament used burnt offerings to ask forgiveness for their sins. However, God made a new covenant with mankind by sending a savior to redeem us from sin, provided we accept the savior and are penitent. This is why we people of the New Testament observe the Lenten season as a time to remember and meditate on Christ’s sacrifice, suffering, death and glorious resurrection. Temptation is a part being human. Even Jesus, God’s son, was tempted by the devil. With God’s help we can be strong and resist temptation and when we are weak pray for forgiveness and strength.
Father, we thank you for sending us your son as the ultimate sacrifice to die for us and rise again proving the depth of your love for us. As we commemorate Christ’s suffering, passion and death during this season of Lent, we ask for strength to obey your laws and walk in your ways. Teach us to love you and each other as you have taught us. Give us insight to see through the wiles of the devil and to know temptation even when disguised as something good. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our redeemer and our example on earth. Amen.
