Read: John 11:17-45
As we navigate these very trying times, John’s account of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead serves as a reminder that we are to keep focused on God and not our circumstances. Lazarus had been ill and died. His sisters Mary and Martha were devastated by his loss. Jesus made his way to Bethany, which was a short distance from where they were and Martha went out to meet him, but Mary stayed with the mourners. When you are faced with life’s adverse circumstances, are you a Martha who actively seeks out God or are you a Mary who “stays with the mourners” soaking up all the pity and melodrama that you can get? Be a Martha and actively seek out God when faced with adversity.
After Jesus reminded Martha of the promise that her brother will rise, she went to get her sister. I find it interesting that both sisters confronted Jesus with the same statement, “Lord if you had been here, our brother would not have died.” This seems to be a small rebuke for Jesus from the sisters. Do you get upset with God when his timing does not match your expectations? God’s delays are not his denials.
Jesus wept when he saw how sad the sisters were. He also loved Lazarus. He reminded the sisters, that if they would see God’s glory if they believed. By our own efforts, things may seem impossible, but let us never forget that when we make petitions to God, we must do so in faith. Jesus spoke and Lazarus came out of the grave.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we love you and thank you for loving us and always being faithful in your promises to us. Amen
