Read: Genesis 4:1-4a
This Scripture reading states that God created the first marriage. It was between Adam and Eve, the first humans that He created. Adam knew Eve, his wife, and she bore a son, who was named Cain. He was a tiller of the land. Eve gave God the credit, saying God had given her a man child. Then she gave birth to a second son, who was named Abel. He owned/tended a flock of sheep. Each son, at the proper time, gave an offering to the Lord. Cain, the oldest gave of the fruit of the land. Abel, gave the first born of his flock of sheep. God respected Abel’s because God said he gave a more excellent gift to the Lord. Blood had to be shed. The fat of the animal was prized as it’s “luxury” and was given to God when the animal was sacrificed. The burning of fat in sacrifice before God is called a sweet aroma to the Lord. (Leviticus 17:6).
This reminds me that God had a Plan for all mankind to be free from sin and shame, reconciling all of us back to him. God sacrificed his only son, Jesus, for our salvation. Jesus became obedient to death, hell and the grave. He gave his life so we could be set free from sin.
SONG: “God gave his Son, they called him Jesus; he came to love, heal and forgive; he lived and died to buy my pardon, an empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.” (Because He Lives No. 364 United Methodist Hymnal)
Dear Father, in these days, help us to reflect on your plan, for us and our salvation. The sacrifice you made, by giving your only begotten Son, Jesus, pure and without blemish. He became obedient to the cross, death and hell. He bore it all for us and we’re so very grateful. Thank You Lord for giving your life, being raised from the dead and giving all who believe and put our trust in you, eternal life. Help us to look forward to you, coming to gather your own, to yourself. Help us to be ready when you come. Amen
