Read: John 11:1-16
As someone who loves gardening and loves to plant seeds, it is always nice and interesting to see the plant that comes from such tiny seeds. Before we can enjoy the beauty of the brand-new plant, the seed has to sort of die. The Scripture for today reminds one of this process of germination.
Jesus, knowing that God was going to be glorified, it would appear that he pretended to ignore the call that his friend, whom he loved, was sick and dying. He waited days before calling his disciples to accompany him to the same town where the residents tried to kill him. He knew that his friend was dead and that the disciples would not only be safe but would see the glory of God, as he brought to life a man who was dead and buried for days.
In this season of Lent, in the northern hemisphere, most plants are bare and look dead, but we are reminded that it is just going through the process that happens during winter. Spring is coming, and these dead-looking plants will be bursting with vibrant colors. There will be new germination and new life, and we will see the glory of God through nature.
It is also a reminder that as we are waiting in this time for Jesus’ return, we should continue to plant seeds of faith and bear fruits of the Spirit of God as we carry the light of God in the world.
Holy God, I pray for strength as we wait in this season of Lent, reflecting on the first Easter and waiting for the return of Jesus our Redeemer. I pray for courage, to speak boldly of you O God, in these turbulent times when evil seems to be having the upper hand. Thank you, God, for always being in control and for allowing us to see your glory when time seems dark.
