Read: Psalm 51:1-17
So here we are at Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, that time of year when we say we are going to give up something whether it be junk food, desserts, eating meat, drinking energy drinks or soda, binge watching TV, social media, judging others, and while these are all good things to give up, how many of us can honestly say that we went right back to that habit as soon as Lent was over? Well just hold on for a bit as I am going to flip the script on you, I am going to fill you in on what I feel this passage in this Psalm is telling us. As I read this scripture, I now see Ash Wednesday, and Lent for that matter in a whole new light. As I see it, David is telling us we need to look deep into our own lives, we need to ask ourselves how it with me and the Lord is. Lent is a time when we need to be in deep reflection, spending time with just ourselves and the Lord, asking the Lord to cleanse us of our transgressions, to, like David pleads, “Create in me a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) So here is my challenge to everyone: let’s be like David, let’s look at our own lives, repent of our own sins instead of pointing out the sins of others, asking ourselves daily how it is with me and the Lord, spending more time wrapped up in the Lord, and, more importantly, do not stop when Lent comes to an end, instead let us make this the way we live every day!! Oh, most precious Lord, we can never thank you for dying on the cross for our sins. During this time let us take time to reflect on our own lives, repent of our sins and may you create a clean heart in each of us. Cindy Harding Certified Lay Servant Comments are closed.
