Read: Genesis 9:8-17
God’s Covenant with Noah
In this reading from Genesis 9: 12-17, we recount the story of Noah and the Ark and learn of God’s continuous struggles with the sinful ways of mankind that has prompted God to destroy a great portion of the human population and the other creatures of the earth, as well as the earth itself. The method of destruction that God has chosen is extinction by flooding the whole planet for one hundred and fifty days. Although God shows a vengeful trait in this episode, God makes a covenant with Noah to never use this method of extinction again.
God’s covenant with Noah involves a sign that God is honoring the covenant by his placement of a rainbow among the clouds after a storm has occurred. The rainbow signifies to the people and the other living creatures of the earth that God is present with them and is keeping the promise not to destroy them, but to give them another chance to redeem themselves from the sinful lifestyle that has led to the near annihilation of the planet and its people and other creatures.
The story of Noah and the Ark is just the beginning of God’s fight for our souls and the eradication of sin among God’s people. We know that during this season God made the biggest sacrifice of all to save mankind. God gave Jesus to teach us and model for us a lifestyle free of sin, and ultimately, Jesus gave his life to save us from sin.
God, we love you, for you love us so much that you give us many chances to redeem ourselves in this sinful world. Help us to change this world by showing the love that you have shown us. Make us your rainbow children. Amen.
