Read: Numbers 21:4-6
This scripture describes the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness and their complaints about lack of food and water. As a consequence, God sent venomous snakes and many Israelites were bitten and died. However, when many people repented, God instructed Moses to create a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. Those who looked at the serpent were healed. This narrative teaches us about the consequences of complaining and the importance of repentance. How often do we, like the Israelites, find ourselves grumbling in the face of challenges or scarcity. It is a reminder that complaining not only reflects ingratitude but can also lead to severe consequences. The fiery serpents serve as a reminder of the impact our negative attitudes can have on our lives. Yet in God’s mercy, there is a redemptive path. The bronze serpent becomes a symbol of salvation and preparation for the redemption through Christ. Similarly, when we acknowledge our faults and turn to God, he offers healing and forgiveness. This passage encourages us to reflect on our lives. Are we prone to complain when faced with difficulties? If so, let us take this moment to repent and turn our eyes on the one who can bring healing and restoration. Jesus, lifted up on the cross, is our ultimate symbol of redemption. As we fix our gaze on him, we find forgiveness, healing and the promise of eternal life. May we be inspired by this reading to cultivate gratitude, repentance and a steadfast focus on Christ, our Savior. Father, as we come before you with hearts filled with gratitude for the countless blessings you have bestowed upon us. We acknowledge the times we have faltered and complained and we humbly regret any ingratitude in our hearts. Thank you for your mercy and forgiveness. Amen. Lynette Alexander Comments are closed.
