Read: Exodus 20:8-17
As we prepare our hearts and mind for the upcoming Lenten season, let’s take a brief dive into an Old Testament text that will help us with our spiritual focus. When Moses was speaking to God on Mt. Sinai, he received from God “instructions” on how to live right with God and man daily. This season is not just about painting and hiding eggs for the children to find and taking photos with the Easter bunny. No! It’s much, much more! Although there were ten commandments that were given to Moses, our text in Exodus 20:8-17 begins with the last commandment of the first four that were “vertical”, that is; between God and man. The next six were between man and man (humans). Much of your devotional time would be well spent meditating on why it is important “to keep the sabbath day holy.” If it is important to God, it should be important to the ones that were created in His image… us! Although these laws given to the Israelites through Moses were pointing to the coming Savior (Jesus the Christ), it should not be lost on us as 21st century Christians just how important they still apply. As we deal with the next six commandments which instruct us even to this day, how to live peacefully amongst one another, we are given an even greater opportunity for spiritual enrichment by giving careful thought to obey each of these commandments. We should be, however, extremely careful not to have the heart of the rich man who questioned Jesus about “what must he do to inherit eternal life” (Mark 10:17-31), but, to have the willingness to accept his answer and ask God to help you keep his commands.
