Read: Psalm 51:6-12
Our emotions always reveal what is going on in our hearts, whether we are happy, angry, fearful, or grieving. Our Bible reading today clearly shows a heartfelt emotion of a broken King David after being confronted by the prophet Nathan about his adulterous affair that led to murder. As believers in Jesus Christ, this serves as a model for prayers of repentance. In 1 John 2:1b we are reminded that if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the father, Jesus Christ the righteous. Also, if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9). When we are convicted by the Holy Spirit about our sin(s) just as King David was, we need to acknowledge our sin and ask God for forgiveness. No amount of our self-righteousness, which is like a filthy rag, can cleanse us. That ability, which is lacking in us, God, in his infinite mercy, provided in Jesus’ death and resurrection. In this Lenten season brothers and sisters, let us repent and trust our savior to create in us a pure heart, let him cleanse and restore to us the joy of his salvation. In Jesus’ name, amen.
